Baby Wipes

The following recipe for homemade baby wipes has been a money saver and an environmental saver for us.  Why did I start making them anyway, and why put a random page on my blog about it?  You can read about it here and here.

Supplies
1/2 roll of pick-your-size paper towels
1 1/2 cups of water
1 T. baby oil
1 1/2 T. liquid baby soap
1 plastic container with air-tight lid

Directions:

I suggest using a good absorbent brand of paper towels.  I know the point is to save money, but this is one time where you don't want to buy the cheapo generic brand.  The last thing you want is a paper towel that rips, leaving you with a finger full of poo.  I like the Brawny pick-your-size paper towels, because each paper towel is not as wide as a normal paper towel.  Even though they are smaller, there are more paper towels on each roll!  Plus the Brawny brand is a strong and absorbent paper towel.

The first step is to cut the roll of paper towels in 1/2.

Why cut the roll in half?  Basically, I couldn't find a plastic container the right size and shape to hold an entire roll of paper towels, so that was the original reason. But it makes more sense using a 1/2 roll, because you get twice as many wipes!  Yes, when the kid has a big blowout you'll go through a bunch of these smaller wipes.  But when the kid just has a little #1, your wipes go twice as far.  When we're trying to eliminate waste, that is exactly what we want.

The homemade baby wipe on the right is about 25% smaller.

The second step is put the 1/2
roll into the plastic container.

Next, mix together the water, baby oil
and liquid baby soap in a separate bowl.

Evenly pour the mixture over the paper towels.

A locking air-tight lid is essential to keep
the wipes from drying out.

Put the lid on the plastic container.
Let the paper towels absorb the water
for about 5-10 minutes.

After the paper towels have absorbed the water, remove the cardboard center from the roll of paper towels.  The baby wipes will easily pull out from the center of the roll!
